Story of our School

Students racing against each other in the playground

CHIMO is located in Smiths Falls, Ontario. Our current school population is 400 students.

CHIMO is an elementary school that serves students in Kindergarten through to Grade 8. We offer both a Core French program, with 40 minutes of French instruction each day, and a French Immersion program, where students receive 150 minutes, (half a day,) of instruction in French.  Both programs begin in Kindergarten, providing students with early and consistent exposure to Canada's official languages.

We also host a Power Up 2 class that focuses on literacy and math skills. Working with our learning partners in Literacy and Math, our educators use data to drive instruction and support student success. They utilize evidence-based tools such as UFLI, along with assessment measures like Dibels and Acadience and UCDSB mathematic assessments, to monitor progress, identify needs, and plan targeted instruction that meets the learner where they are.

We are proud to offer an exceptional range of extracurricular activities and clubs that allow students to explore their interests and talents. Opportunities include choir, chess club, Lego club, comic club, dance club and our Sage group, as well as involvement in school musicals. These experiences provide student with opportunities for creativity, collaboration, and personal growth, both on stage and behind the scenes.

Our dedicated staff also lead a strong athletics program, offering teams in soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country, track and field, and hockey. These programs promote teamwork, perseverance, and school spirit while supporting students' physical well-being.

The CHIMO Elementary School Council is a committed and engaged group of individuals who play an active role in supporting our school community. They organize events such as family movie nights, scavenger hunts, bring in guest speakers through their PIC grant to benefit students and families, fundraise to support school initiatives, and generously volunteer their time within the school.

We are fortunate to have a large and dedicated cohort of volunteers, including parents, grandparents and community members, who enrich our school community. They support literacy development, help facilitate our hot breakfast program, organize special lunches such as grilled cheese days and turkey dinners, creating a warm and welcoming environment for all students.
